50 Year Anniversary of the first celebration in 1970

The Lake Erie Islands will be holding its Earth Week celebration in 2020 with events to mark the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970.  Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day after viewing a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, in 1969. Senator Nelson hoped to use the same type of energy as the anti-war movement to forge public consciousness about air and water pollution. Senator Nelson announced the idea for a “national teach-in on the environment” to the national media.

On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans demonstrated for a healthy, sustainable environment-against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness and the extinction of wildlife. By the end of 1970, the first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean AirClean Water and Endangered Species Acts.

The Lake Erie Islands Conservancy (LEIC), Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center (LEINWC), and Put-in-Bay High School’s Environmental Club (PIBHSEC) will participate with events during Earth Week 2020.

Participants that take part in the week’s events can win a reusable water bottle from the LEINWC by attending events and participating in activities as described on the Earth Week Check List. This list will be distributed on the LEINWC and LEIC website and available through the PIBHSEC.

On Monday, April 20, 2020, 3:30 Students will be asked to bring recyclable materials to Put-in-Bay School for a special program with LEIWNC director Renee Fultz. Materials collected will be taken to the recycling center.

On Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at 3:30 pm, the Lake Erie Islands Conservancy will be sponsoring an invasive garlic mustard removal day and clean up at the newly purchased Coopers Woods Preserve. Please bring work gloves if you have them. Garbage bags will be provided. Come enjoy the native wildflowers and help keep our woods community healthy.

On Thursday, April 23, 2020, join the LEIC for a shoreline clean up and nature walk at 3:30pm at the Scheeff East Point Preserve. Please bring work gloves if you have them. Garbage containers will be provided.

On Friday, April 24, 2020, join the Village Tree Commission at 4:00pm at the Village housing/property adjacent to the Put-in-Bay Post Office for an Arbor Day Tree Planting event. We will continue at the Village Bathing Beach for a tree planting and then head to the LEINWC at 5:00pm for a cookout. Please bring an earth day dish to share, your own table service and refillable beverage container. Prizes for the week’s activities will be awarded at this event.
