“Other holidays repose upon the past; Arbor Day proposes for the future.”  – Julius Sterling Morton

On Friday, April 26, 2024, 4:00 pm, the 15^th Arbor Day Celebration will be held  at the Village Arbor Day site adjacent to the Put-in-Bay Post Office. 

The Council of the Village of Put-in-Bay has allocated funds for Arbor Day expenses. During the celebration, members of the community will plant a Sugar Maple tree (Acer saccharum.)  Sugar maple trees are important as sources of syrup and wood.   Maple wood may be used for bowling pins, bowling alley lanes, pool cues, butcher’s blocks, furniture, and some baseball bats,  The Cherokee Indians produced a purple dye from Maple bark and used it to dye cloth.

At the urging and determination of Julius Sterling Morton, a newspaper editor, the first Arbor Day Celebration was held on April 10, 1874, in Nebraska.  Today, Arbor Day is a national holiday.  Arbor Day is also celebrated throughout the world.

The tallest tree in the United States is the “General Sherman,” a giant sequoia, located in Sequoia National Park, California.  The tree is 275 feet tall.

The oldest tree in the United Sates is a Great Bristlecone pine, located in the White Mountains of California.  The tree is over 5,000 years old and is believed the oldest living tree in the world.

Mr.Maxwell Schrimpf, State Service Forester, will attend the Put-in-Bay Arbor Day Celebration. He will plant a tree in recognition of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ 75th Anniversary this year.

Put-in-Bay, Ohio, has been named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to the goals and principles of the Arbor Day Foundation: a tree commission, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.  Members of the Village of Put-in-Bay Tree Commission are Lisa Brohl, Kelly Faris, and Kendra Koehler.
