The Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center, Lake Erie Islands Conservancy, OSU’s Stone Laboratory, the Put-in-Bay Township Park District, and for the first time the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society, have collaborated to produce a week of Ecotourism, Adventure Travel, and Agritourism. This weeklong celebration, The 3rd Annual Island Green Week, 2018, will run from August 4t h to August 11th

This event will allow visitors to learn more about the island’s many natural treasures that are on the Lake Erie Islands through a variety of events all in one week. Participants will enjoy the natural beauty, geology, and ecology of these islands. By doing this we will promote the local businesses and generate more overnight stays so visitors are able to enjoy the events described below. 


3rd Annual Middle Bass Island Poker Kayak Day

Saturday August 4th from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Middle Bass Island; cost is $20.  Kayakers start and finish at the Middle Bass Island State Park camping area.  The paddle around the island includes three additional stops (the State Park Marina and two preserves).  A welcome packet at the start has a description of the course and information about the stops.  Stops are staffed with volunteers for safety and to distribute poker cards and snacks.  The finish has a cook-out with hot-dogs, chips, and water while 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners are determined.  Proceeds from the event will benefit signage for the Put-in-Bay Township Park District’s newest preserves on Middle Bass Island. Historic Lonz Winery Tours

            Saturday August 4th, Sunday August 5th, and Saturday August 11th hours to be announced. Middle Bass Island. Cost is XXX. Participants will get a guided tour of the iconic Lonz Winery. 


Historic Aquatic Visitor Center Tours with Wild Saturday Out-reach Program

            Saturday August 4th and Friday August 10th from 10AM until 5PM. Free.

Visitors can stop by the Aquatic Visitors Center, about one mile west of downtown Put-in-Bay, to experience Lake Erie science up close. Activities include inspecting Lake Erie’s complex ecosystem through hands-on displays, observing and identifying live fish in ten large aquariums, and discovering current research to protect Lake Erie. Children under age 16 can fish from the fishing pier for free. The facility is run by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. This day will also include a special interpretive program.


Middle Bass Forested Wetland Dedication   

            Sunday August 5th at 1pm. The Put-in-Bay Township Park District will dedicate their Middle Bass Forested Wetland Preserve and trail at the parking area on Fox Rd., Middle Bass Island, Ohio. A reception will follow.


3rd Annual Eco-Tour & Fair

            Monday August 6th and Tuesday August 7th at 9AM until 5PM on South Bass Island.

Participants will stop in at the Put-in-Bay Town Hall any time during those days to pick up their tour packet. This includes maps, tour booklet, several goodies, freebies, and coupons from island businesses, plus several island businesses selling their wares at the Town Hall. This unique ramble and island tour will include over 32 fun nature related stops. Among the highlights planned will be hiking Coopers Woods and seeing a natural cave and a visit to Historic Gibraltar Island. There will be possible group camping and/or bonfire at a place TBA on South Bass Island.  Discounts at several restaurants and gift shops will be given to Island Ramblers. Miller Boat Line will give a discount to anyone wishing to rent a golf cart that day and offer a special discount for round trip ferry transportation as well. Proceeds benefit the Put-in-Bay Township Park District and will be used to maintain and preserve island parks. Times and Dates of activities TBA.


4th Annual Stargazing Cruise

Monday August 6th 8PM.  Tickets prices are: Adults- $20 and Kids $10.

The cruise will leave from the downtown Miller Boat Line dock at sunset via Miller Boat Line. The stars will light up the sky as island resident, retired teacher, and astronomer Jay Reynolds will engage the guests about the night sky, planets, and stars allowing the general public an opportunity to enjoy a show from outer space on the ferry boat. Heinemans Winery is donating wine, with nice horsd’oeuvres.


Wild Tuesdays- “Slitherin’ Snakes”

Tuesday August 7th from 1PM-3PM at the Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center, free.

The purpose of our Wild Tuesdays program is to educate visitors about Ohio’s native wildlife by providing up-close and hands-on interactive experiences for visitors and local residents. This week’s topic will be Snakes with Dr. Kristin Stanford from OSU’s Stone Laboratory. Kristin will be here with the Lake Erie Island Water Snake and other native snakes for a great hands-on experience to learn about the importance of our snakes on the islands. This is a great family event. A tour of the Center museum will also be free at that time.


Historic Gibraltar Island Tour

            Wednesday August 8th at 1:30-3:30 p.m. cost $5.00 per person.

Gibraltar Island Tour Discount is only for Eco-Ramble participants (must show wrist band). Take the Water Taxi from the Boardwalk ($3 Round Trip price – for this event only). Please park at Town Hall or on Street, not at Boardwalk.


The Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center’s- Annual Pig Roast & Raffle

            Wednesday August 8th from 6PM until 9PM near the beautiful woods at the Goat Restaurant on South Bass Island, $15.00 The islanders will put on a true island style pig roast. Featuring a slow roasted hog spit with corn and baked potatoes on an outdoor barbeque grill, including island wines and the island wine culture. Organic entertainers Ray Fogg, Bob Gatewood, and Island famous Ian Ladd will put on a show befitting the event. The silent auction will feature a variety of island prizes you cannot get any place else such as; a trip for two to Rattlesnake Island, Ferry Passes, five course dinner for eight at a local restaurant, hand crafted art work, Jewelry from Jessie (an artist famous on South Bass Island for her gorgeous gemstone pieces), and a Monarch Butterfly Tagging trip to North Bass Island for two people. Raffle tickets will be available at the Wildlife Center and at the Town Hall the day of the event. All of the food is donated by island restaurants- (See Pig Roast Flyer for more details). The proceeds from this event will go towards the Building Addition Fund for more space at the Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center to continue to carry out our mission educating youths and adults about the unique ecology on the islands


Lake Erie Islands Historic Society Annual Auction

            Thursday August 9th the annual auction of the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society features a very large section of items of value donated by Put-in-Bay, Ohio residents and businesses, many of which focus on Put-in-Bay History. This Put-in-Bay Auction is the principal fundraiser for the Historical Society. For additional information and location information visit the Put-in-Bay Historical Society website


Nature & Art @ LEINWC

            Friday August 10th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, at the Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center, $10.00 Come to our back porch for an afternoon of “Plein Air” Artwork.  We will supply the materials and Mother Nature will supply the subject matter.  An Island artist will guide you in your efforts to capture your subject on paper.


South Bass Island Lighthouse Tours

Saturday August 11th from 11AM-5PM., At the South Bass Island Light on South Bass Island, free.

            Guests will be able to tour the South Bass Island Lighthouse and learn about its history, climb the stairs up 60 feet to take in the great view of Put-in-Bay from the top of the tower, and tour the historic grounds that includes a certified butterfly garden by Monarch Watch. The Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The view from lighthouse point is stunning


Kelleys Island Glacial Groove Tour and Geology Hike

            Saturday August 11th 1PM-4PM. Join the staff of Kelleys Island State Park for an opportunity to visit and view up close the largest glacial grooves in North America. Park staff will discuss the different theories of how these grooves were created and the history of the surrounding stone quarries. The tour will also include a visit to one of Kelleys Island’s abandoned quarries to discuss fossils and the habitat created by this aging quarry. Participants will have the option to ride the Jet Express to Kelleys Island from Put-in-Bay at a discounted rate.
